FLIGHTS OF FANCY
Malina’s hand-made jewellery is imaginative and distinctive. The company wanted to accompany each main range with a brief, original and creative ‘background’ story that would, however tenuously, connect with the product’s appearance. “You can be as off-the-wall as you like,” they told me. So I took them at their word. Here are a few of them.
NOT EVERY DIARIST IS SAMUEL PEPYS...
...or even human! This one, for example, is a cat. When a customer approached me to draft a few humorous ‘blogs from her cat’ (she had her reasons, don’t ask) I was happy to do my best. In the event, the lady concerned was so pleased with the result, she commissioned a whole book – to be presented as her cat’s diary for 2013. It was fun interviewing the cat, for background.
OK, so it's not everyone’s thing. But we’ve all got to have a hobby. And poetry’s one of mine. This collection of reflections was published by Carcanet in 2009. It didn’t make me rich.
THE KRAKEN CHALLENGE
The Kraken is the terror of the Caribbean. So, what would you do if you came face to face with it? Fight? Run? Or maybe you'd be too scared to confront it in the first place. This online game lets you find out - taking you on a voyage which asks you to make crucial decisions at every stage, leading either to a terrifying encounter or a humiliating retreat. I constructed the entire narrative framework, and each detailed scene, from a 2-sentence brief.
Stifle the yawns, if you can, because it's more poetry. As a keen, if amateur, poet, I’ve had poems published in several places, both online and offline.
FINALLY, JUST ONE TINY BLOW...
...of my trumpet. Here are two examples of my fiction work that have won acclaim by fellow writers. The 25,000-word CWA entry (left) was a runner up; the 5,000-word ‘Richardson Revenant’ won the national Saga short story award. I have also been nominated for awards by the BBC and The Folio Society.
